It was yet another high turnout day at the World Series of Poker on Wednesday when over 4350 players took their seats on the final flight of Day 1’s for the $10K Championship, aka the WSOP Main Event.

Although the numbers are yet to come in officially, the total attendance for the WSOP 2022 Main Event has now exceeded the magical 8000 figure.

With late registration available through the first two levels of each Day 2 on Thursday and Friday, it is still quite possible that this year’s Main could break the record for the Main Event entries.

Currently, the total entrants stand at 8061 unofficially. The record for the largest turnout at the Main came in 2006, when 8773 players took part in the tournament to make it the richest tournament in the history of poker.

In 2019, the Main came close to beating that record but had to settle for second place after 8569 entrants took part in that event. This year’s turnout is only hundreds of entries away from breaking that record.

To become the biggest-ever Main Event, the remainder of the two Day 2s would need to attract another 713 entries. However, for it to become the second-largest, the officials would hope for at least 510 entrants.

When the World Series was held in the fall of 2021, close to 300 entrants registered on the two Day 2s at the Main Event. This year, with attendance over 20% higher across the board, expect another 350 to 400 entries to add to the field size.

That would bring the total number of entrants close to breaking the 2019 level and a couple of hundred entries closer to becoming the biggest Main in history. This year, the enthusiasm to play the world’s richest poker event is much higher. Despite the late registration available for the first two levels for Day 2, expect hundreds of more players. It would not be surprising to see it become the largest ever or at least get close to beating that record.

The World Series of Poker Main Event kicked off last Sunday, July 3rd. Historically, the first starting flight is the smallest of the flights, and yet, despite that, it managed to pull in 900 players. Day 1B on July 4th, US Independence Day, welcomed another 1245 entrants.

Anticipating a massive turnout for the last starting flight, the officials made last-minute changes to the schedule. Day 2AB, which initially was scheduled to combine the player fields of Day 1A and Day 1B, would also include Day 1C. Day 2D would only comprise survivors from the final first flight.

Indeed, the officials were right. Day 1C added another 1800 players to the field while the final flight added a staggering 4350 entrants — enough to exceed the 8000 mark, making it one of the highest turnout starting days in recent history.

WSOP’s new partner GGPoker had been running qualifiers and satellites via the Road to Vegas campaign, which was another success as it sent hundreds of players to the Main. Per the statistics provided to pokerfuse, 129 players qualified for the $10k buy-in event via the Road to Vegas campaign, while 143 players bought into the event directly on the GGPoker client.

Another 40 players made their way to Sin City via GGPoker’s subscription-based app ClubGG.

Last year, two players who qualified to the Main through the ClubGG app almost reached the Final Table, finishing 11th and 13th, respectively.
