Key Takeaways
  • 888poker invites players to beta test its downloadable Mac poker client.
  • Until now only an instant play browser version was available for Mac users.
  • PokerStars, Full Tilt and PartyPoker have had full Mac clients for some time—iPoker is now the only top five network which hasn’t released a downloadable Mac client.

888poker has quietly announced that it is now beta testing downloadable client software for the Apple Mac, and players are invited to give it a try.

Until now Mac users have only had access to an “instant play” browser version, that does not save hand histories on the player’s computer. The new version offers a native experience, giving players access to all of 888poker’s software features.

The 888poker rep revealed that the project was in the pipeline back in April, and has now invited users via its 2+2 support thread to test the new software.

The existence of the Mac software by 888’s software development arm Cassava Enterprises has been known for a while: It was the client accidentally revealed on Caesars Interactive Entertainment’s WSOP.com which allowed players in Nevada to briefly deposit and play for real money.

888 will join many other top-ranking networks that now offer Mac clients. PokerStars, which has had a native client for the Mac since September 2008, recently stated that it is nearly ready to release an all-new client rewritten in Apple’s native Cocoa API.

Other options available for Mac users include PartyPoker, which has had a downloadable Mac version since October 2011, and Full Tilt, which launched a beta version way back in 2005—it could be said that 888poker is a little late to the party.

888, now a a top-four online poker network, also has a fully-featured mobile client that works on Android and iOS devices. It announced MTT support earlier this week.
