The 2023 edition of the Brazilian Series of Poker (BSOP)'s Brasilia stop, hosted by PokerStars, is now complete, and it was the sixth time the series has come to the Federal Capital since the first stop in 2008. After a hiatus since 2020 because of COVID, the Brasilia stop came back this year, and just like in 2020, the Main Event title went to none other than Fernando Araújo.

With 685 entries, this year’s edition was smaller than the 2020 event, and down significantly from the height of the event in 2018, when 1136 entries tried their hand at the Main. This year was actually the smallest field size for the Brasilia Main, since the inaugural edition in 2008 only drew 141 runners.

That was still enough for the two-time winner to pocket BRL 305,100 (about $62,500 USD) for the top finish and despite the smaller field size, that was actually a bit more than the BRL 300,000 he won in 2020. Interestingly, it was 2015 that saw the biggest first-place prize at BRL 357,500 while the 2018 winner only pocketed BRL 293,140 despite the much larger field size.

Araújo Bags Second Brasilia Title

BSOP Brasilia Final TableLast week, Fernando Araújo became the first player to win BSOP Brasilia twice, and just the second player in the overall history of the BSOP to nab two titles. With the recent win, he joined Saulo Sabioni as the only two-time BSOP title winners.

Araújo came to the final table with the biggest stack, over 1.3 million more than the second-place stack of Caroline Dapousa, one of three women with big results on the final day of the series.

While she had to settle for third in the Main Event worth BRL 133,500, Carla Siqueira and Cleide Sobrinho both bagged trophies on the final day with Siqueira winning Event #22 after finishing fourth in an event earlier in the day.

After the elimination of the last woman standing in third place, a heads up was set between Araújo and Roberto Garcia. Garcia actually came into the final table with one of the shorter stacks at less than one million compared to almost six million for the leader, Araújo. The heads-up was a fairly quick affair, leaving Araújo to celebrate becoming just the second player to bag two Main Event titles on the BSOP.
