At the end of the second Day 2 of this year’s WSOP Main Event, Phil Ivey has more than doubled his chip stack to become the overall chip leader going into Day 3.
A key hand during the seventh level of play helped Ivey build his lead. Ivey flopped a set of sixes and a three way all in developed with Fabian Scherle holding K-K, an overpair to the ten high board, and Lazaro Hernandez who had flopped a straight.
A river ten gave Ivey a full house, sent both his opponents to the rail and produced a monster pot which took his stack almost to the 400k chip mark.
The top ten players going though from Day 2b include Event #46: $50k Poker Players Championship winner John Hennigan, and Isaac “WestmenloAA” Baron, who made the final table of the $10k Pot Limit Omaha event which immediately preceded the start of the Main Event.
Phil Hellmuth exited from the event after a disappointing series which did not result in him adding to his record 13 WSOP bracelets. However he did add seven cashes to his resumé, including a runner up finish in Event# 7 and 6th place in Event #61: $10k Seven Card Stud.
Daniel Negreanu, who has logged nine cashes with two 2nd place finishes during the Series—will return to play on Thursday. Negreanu won $8.2 million as runner up in the Big One for One Drop, but is still in pursuit of his seventh WSOP bracelet.
Negreanu’s small ball poker style has given way to small stack poker as he takes less than 40k chips into Day 3.
John Juanda, Daniel Alaei and Barry Greenstein all have chips left in front of them, but former champion Joe Cada failed to survive the day.
Thursday will see 1,864 players return, none of them too happy to see Phil Ivey with over half a million chips in his stack.
The money bubble will burst when 693 players remain—a possibility during the five levels of play scheduled for Day 3, but more likely to hit during Friday’s play.
